What actually happened

The facts span two days. They are set out below in order, as reported by Reuters and the Associated Press.

1. 22 September 2026

   At the rostrum of the UN General Assembly, Donald Trump announces a change of terminology: US government documents will henceforth refer to “Super Intelligence” rather than “artificial intelligence”.

2. 22 September 2026

   According to the Associated Press, the State Department’s Bureau of International Organization Affairs emails its staff the same day, asking them to replace “Artificial Intelligence” with “Super Intelligence” in documents and positions, and to use the abbreviation “SI”.

3. 23 September 2026

   The Associated Press reports the instruction. The agency notes that it was not immediately clear whether other bureaus had followed or would follow suit.

4. 23 September 2026

   At a UN Security Council meeting on artificial intelligence, US representatives use the term “SI”.

None of this means that the United Nations has adopted the term, or that every part of the US government already uses it.

What the signal means — and what it does not

The vocabulary of a US administration does not automatically become the world’s vocabulary. It does, however, carry weight in international debate. The United States holds a leading position in the global technology industry, its positions are echoed in multilateral forums, and its choice of words travels fast — through the press, through companies and through institutions.

A phrase born in political speech can become a media category, and then a commercial one. Whether that happens here remains to be seen, market by market and language by language.

Super Intelligence, superintelligence or Super Intelligent?
